Thanks

As a new member to South London Theatre, I am grateful to everyone for the friendly welcome I received when I joined, and in particular to Lisa Thomas, Mark Ireson and Jeanette Hoile who did a great deal to help me settle in. I would especially like to thank the technical team for their sterling efforts with Travels With My Aunt (2014).

Director's Notes

I have always been a fan of the writing of Graham Greene and in particular the life-changing journey taken by retired bank manager, Henry Pulling, in Travels With My Aunt. After meeting his septuagenarian Aunt Augusta, a woman with a colourful past, Henry is plucked from his comfortable rut of attending to his dahlias and life in leafy South London and thrown headlong into a twilight demimonde of glamorous criminality. From his home in fictional Southwood, Henry travels with his aunt first to Brighton, the to Paris, Istanbul and Boulognebefore finally reaching Asuncion in Paraguay. En route, he encounters hippies, war criminals and CIA operatives and gradually comes alive as he breaks all the taboos hitherto forbidden in the lifetime spentbehind the hygienic barrier plodding away at the bank. The play you will see tonight is presented in a very minimal way with just four actors taking on the many larger than life charactersthat populate the book. All four play Henry Pulling. With just a small costume addition the actors must adopt to a new role. This involves not only a shift in their playing style but also a change of voice, accent and rhythm of speech. I am pleased that this play will be my directoral debut for South London Theatre. It has been a joy to work closely with four talented actors and all those who have helped me with their technical expertise. It is my favourite book, one of my favourite plays and I very much hope you enjoy this evening's show.
