Introduction
Greek is based on Sophocles' tragedy of Oedipus, who, Berkoff writes, 'found a city in the grip of a plague and sought to rid it of its evil centre represented by the Sphinx.' For Berkoff, Britain has become a gradually decaying island, where violence streams through the streets 'like an all pervading effluence and we, the British, slump in front of video screens, strangled in our attempts to communicate with each other. Eddy, his immense energy fuelled by his passion for life and his woman, attacks the pollution around him like an ancient warrior brandishing a smoking sword.
