Introduction
"'New Morning' premiered at the Bush Theatre in London in 1993 to critical acclaim. It is a play about loss and discovery, and 'the need to...well just be - you know.' Despite being an award winning playwright and well known in his native Ireland, Declan Hughes is still something of an unknown quantity in Britain. He is the most modern of Irish writers in that he looks to the future rather than the past for his subject matter. The now is what concerns him and dealing with your own past is how you deal with the present. Deal with the present and you can look to the future. He is not a naive writer, however, neither is he an eternal optimist. The past is a treacherous landscape that may come back to haunt you when you least expect it. The metaphors are there if you choose to look for them. In the charcters of Mary and Deborah he encapsulates a nation's struggle to grow, leave the past and face an uncertain future but it is a future on their terms and of their choosing. They are very modern characters. It is a New Morning long in coming but its arrival is inevitable. Jack King
