Introduction

Life is like a railway station, Stevie said. The train of birth brings us in, the train of death will carry us away. This is a thoughtful, warm, funny and touching piece, charting the life and loves of Florence Margaret Smith, better known as Stevie, one of Britains most eccentric and original poets. Stevie was a mass of fascinating contradictions, obsessed by death but with a volatile attachment to the Church of England, although often child-like herself, she disliked children yet left her money to the NSPCC, a woman who loved beautiful clothes and yet when presented to the Queen wore a jumble-sale hat.
