Introduction
As the last woman to be hanged in Britain, Ruth Ellis achieved the notoriety she craved but maybe not in the way she had ever imagined. From her dreams of being a Hollywood star to the cold reality of the steel bars of Holloway prison, Ruth came to meet her demise.
A tragic tale of a fragile woman betrayed by every man she met and loved. This play asks the questions that, at the time , were inconceivable - her death divided a classist nation and shook the morality of capital punishment.
Some good came from her hanging as it haunted those that allowed it and acted as a catalyst for change in the abhorrent death penalty.
