Introduction
Blackbird was one of the triumphs of the 2005 Edinburgh Festival and fortunately transferred for a highly acclaimed London run at the Almeida. It is a riveting study of sexual obsession which shocks and disturbs as it explores difficult questions about an often taboo subject. It deals with a meeting between a 28-year-old woman and a 56-year-old man, 15 years after they have had a relationship for which the man has served time. It is not about the woman seeking revenge but rather closure on a relationship that ended in a Tynemouth hotel room. Without condoning the actions of the man, Blackbird explores whether it is possible to separate love from paedophilia and suggests that there may be a strange affinity, tantamount to love, between people of different generations and that adult guilt and childhood innocence should never be automatically assumed.
