Introduction
The Rape Of the Belt is a comedy raking the myth of Heracles's Labours (Hercules to non-Greeks) full of comic holes. Written by pacifist, Benn Levy, it examines in modern terms the famous task assigned to the Greek hero and his comrade in arms Theseus, of obtaining the jealously prized Belt of the Amazons and demonstrates just how formidable a true peace-lover could be threatened with dishonour. And the serious side? The battles men and women fight; the competition roused by their mutual suspicion over-layed with the feminine logic of peace as the highest prize, all contribute to a play with zest, cool humour, slapstick and moments of thought.
